What is Bhang Thandai?

Bhang thandai is a traditional cold milk drink made with bhang (cannabis leaf paste or powder), mixed with spices like cardamom, black pepper, and saffron, sweetened with sugar or mishri, and blended with nuts like almonds, pistachios, and cashews. It is the most iconic bhang preparation in Indian culture — the drink of Holi.

The word "thandai" comes from the Hindi "thanda" meaning cold — because the drink is traditionally served chilled. Bhang thandai has been offered to Lord Shiva during religious rituals for over 2,000 years and remains a central part of Mahashivratri celebrations across North India.

What is Bhang Lassi?

Bhang lassi is the yoghurt-based cousin of bhang thandai — made with dahi (curd) instead of milk as the base. Most famous in Varanasi, where government- licensed bhang shops have served bhang lassi to pilgrims and tourists for generations. Bhang lassi is thicker, tangier, and generally stronger than thandai because yoghurt absorbs bhang compounds differently than milk.

The most famous bhang lassi destination in India is Varanasi's Blue Lassi Shop and the government bhang shops near the Vishwanath Temple — where bhang lassi has been sold legally and traditionally for over a century.

Traditional Bhang Lassi Recipe

For 2 people | Quick 10-minute recipe

  • 1 tablespoon bhang powder
  • 300ml fresh dahi (full-fat yoghurt)
  • 200ml cold water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Rose water to taste

Method: Grind bhang with water to paste. Blend with dahi, water, sugar and spices. Strain. Serve chilled. This is the Varanasi method.

Safe Dosage for Bhang Thandai and Lassi

Bhang thandai and lassi are the most variable formats for consuming bhang because preparation methods and concentrations differ greatly. This is the most important thing to understand before making your first batch.

Start weak: For first-time preparation, use half the amount of bhang powder stated in any recipe. You can always make the next batch stronger.

Wait 90 minutes: Effects from bhang consumed in milk or lassi take 45-90 minutes to appear. Do not drink more because you feel nothing after 30 minutes.

Effects last 4-8 hours: Plan your day accordingly. Never drive or operate machinery after consuming bhang thandai.

Best served after a meal: A light meal before drinking bhang thandai slows absorption and creates a more comfortable, gradual experience.

Prefer Ready-Made Dosing?

If you want the traditional bhang experience without the variable dosing of thandai preparation, our bhang goli collection gives you precisely measured bhang goli — simply take with warm milk.

Adults (18+) only. Consume responsibly. Never drive after consuming bhang.
